BIOGRAPHY: POW, CONDUCTOR AND FATHER
GUY NICOLSON

Born on the 9th February 1895, during World War 1 Guy was with the Royal Berkshires where he received multiple decorations for bravery including being awarded the MC and Bar within 3 days in France. After the war Guy returned to Oxford to take up his Rhodes Scholarship. After teaching at Harrow, then the Dragon School, he returned to Johannesburg where he took over the faltering Ridge School. He gradually turned the school around, become a famous Headmaster, respected by his colleagues and remembered with affection by hundreds of past pupils.

With the outbreak of WW ll, Guy joined up despite his age, as a Captain on the staff of the South African 2nd Division. In 1942, aged 47, Guy was captured along with the entire South African 2nd Division in the disastrous fall of Tobruk on 21 June 1942 during the North African desert campaign. He "celebrated" his 50th birthday in the POW camp at Hadamar in Germany in February 1945.

Guy had a great enjoyment of games, inter-personal banter and robust debate. He invented games, both intellectual and physical. He used these skills to entertain the other prisoners, and keep everyone’s spirits up. Guy had the complete trust of his men; they would follow him to the end of the world – and to the realisation of his dream – to perform the full version of Brahms’ Deutsche Requiem.
